In a digital camera, light hits a sensor instead of a frame of film. This sensor is an array of pixels, much like a traditional TFT/LCD monitor. These pixels are light sensitive, and convert the amount and colour of light that hits them into an electrical signal. A chip in the camera converts these signals into the digital image file that you see on the screen at the back of the camera.
